Why Striving For Work/Life Balance is a Fool's Errand

"I am doing the best I can!"

These words echoed in my mind relentlessly as I grappled with the competing demands of work and home. At the office, guilt nagged at me - was I neglecting my family? At home, thoughts of unfinished projects and looming deadlines intruded on precious family moments. I felt like I was caught in an endless cycle, spinning faster and faster yet never quite catching up.

I was desperately trying to achieve that elusive 'work-life balance' we hear so much about. But no matter how hard I tried, it always felt just out of reach. I was left wondering: Was I the only one feeling this way? Was there something I was missing?

This was me (and occasionally still is me). I was trying to maintain a delicate balance of all the things and constantly felt like I was failing miserably. I would draw strict boundaries around ‘home’ and ‘work’ but each still managed to bleed into the other. I worked with some AMAZING people who seemed to have it all and have it all together. How are these women managing it all so effortlessly?  These thoughts led me to ask a lot of questions and those answers led me to two conclusions:

  • Most people are not handling it all - it just looks that way on the outside (I was told numerous times that I looked like I had it all together too! Crazy!)

  • Balance was not the answer.

But if maintaining boundaries to keep balance was not the answer, what is?

Enter the concept of work-life harmony. It's not about perfect equilibrium – it's about creating a life where all the pieces fit together in a way that feels both manageable and meaningful. It is the ability to integrate all the parts and pieces of you and your life in a way that feels fulfilling.

What's the Difference Between Balance and Harmony?

Well, in short, less stress. Work-life balance often implies a strict separation between our professional and personal lives. It's like trying to keep two sides of a scale perfectly even. Sounds exhausting, right? (Spoiler alert - it is exhausting)

Work-life harmony, on the other hand, is about integrating all aspects of our lives in a way that feels natural and fulfilling. It's not about perfect equilibrium, but about creating a life where work, relationships, personal growth, and leisure all complement each other.

What Harmony Can Do for You That Balance Cannot

☑️Reduced stress: When we stop trying to compartmentalize our lives, we can reduce the pressure we put on ourselves to be "perfect" in each area.

☑️Increased satisfaction: Harmony allows us to bring our whole selves to everything we do, leading to greater authenticity and joy.

☑️Improved productivity: When work and life flow together seamlessly, we often find ourselves more engaged and efficient in both areas.

☑️Better relationships: Harmony helps us be more present in our interactions, whether with colleagues, friends, or family.

☑️Personal growth: By integrating different aspects of our lives, we open ourselves up to new insights and opportunities for development.

How to Cultivate Work-Life Harmony

☑️Identify or clarify your core values: What really matters to you? Let these guide your decisions in both work and personal life.

☑️Set boundaries, but make them flexible: It's okay to have some separation, but allow for fluidity with no guilt when needed.

☑️Find work that aligns with your passions: When your job resonates with your personal interests, harmony comes more naturally.

☑️Practice mindfulness: Being present in each moment helps you appreciate the interconnectedness of all aspects of your life.

☑️Cultivate gratitude: Regularly acknowledge the positive aspects of both your work and personal life. This practice can help you appreciate the interconnectedness of these areas and foster a sense of overall fulfillment.

☑️Embrace technology wisely: Use tools that help you integrate your responsibilities, but don't let them take over your life.

Ok, so easier said than done, right? On some days, absolutely, but I have found adjusting my thinking from balance to harmony has helped me feel less guilty, more present in all aspects of my life, and has created more of an ease for me.

Remember, there's no one-size-fits-all approach to work-life harmony. It's a personal journey that evolves as we grow and change. The key is to stay attuned to your needs and adjust accordingly.
