It is Monday (Of course) and I am running late for a meeting (Because...of course) when I hop in my car, GPS says I will just make it on time...and then my gas tank says, 'Hey, past Hope did NOT fill the tank because it was raining...LOSER...so now you must stop before your meeting!'
GGGGGRRRRRRRRRRRRrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr
So, I know I am not alone in this scenario of my past self totally messing things up for me! Daily life can get quite hectic and in all of the chaos it is easy to fall into the trap of procrastination. We push tasks aside, break promises to ourselves, and often feel overwhelmed by the growing list of responsibilities. But what if I told you that the key to breaking this cycle lies in understanding the relationship between your past, present, and future selves?
The Triangle of Time: Past, Present, and Future You
Imagine for a moment that you exist in three states: your past self, your present self, and your future self. Each version of you is interconnected, influencing and being influenced by the others. While past self is, well, in the past, and your future self is a state you have not yet reached, present self is the opportunity to bridge between who you were and who you will become (And hopefully, make things easier for you).
The Procrastination Predicament
As professionals, we often find ourselves juggling multiple responsibilities. Career demands, family obligations, personal goals – the list seems endless. It's in these moments of overwhelm that procrastination rears its ugly head. We tell ourselves, I'll do it later, or It's not that important right now.
But here's the truth: Every time we procrastinate, we are not just putting off a task – we are placing a burden on our future selves. Yuck!
Your Future Self: The Silent Beneficiary (or Victim)
Every decision you make today impacts your future self. When you choose to skip a workout, postpone that project, or break a promise to yourself, you are essentially saying, Future me can handle it. (Or, really, SUCK IT future self!)
But imagine if your future self could speak to you right now. What would they say?
Thank you for completing that report early. I feel so much less stressed now.
I wish you had gone for that run. I'm feeling sluggish and behind on our fitness goals.
I appreciate you setting up that savings account. It's making a real difference in our financial security.
GIRL! Why didn't you put gas in the car like you promised!! Now I am late, stressed, and ANNOYED.
Your future self is waiting, hoping that present you will make choices that benefit them.
The Gratitude of Your Future Self
Now, think about times when you pushed through procrastination and completed a task. Remember the feeling of relief and accomplishment? That is your future self sending gratitude back through time.
When you honor your commitments and tackle your to-do list, you are not just crossing off items – you are actively shaping a better future for yourself.
Practical Strategies to Empower Your Future Self
Visualize Your Future Self: Take a moment to imagine yourself a week, a month, or a year from now. What do you want that version of you to feel and experience?
Practice Future Self Meditation: Spend a few minutes each day envisioning your ideal future self and the actions needed to become that person.
Use the 10-Minute Rule: When procrastinating, commit to working on the task for just 10 minutes. Often, you'll find momentum and continue beyond that initial commitment.
Celebrate Small Wins: Acknowledge every task completed, no matter how small. This reinforces positive behavior and motivates further action.
The Compound Effect of Consistent Action
Remember, success is not built on grand, sweeping gestures. It is the result of small, consistent actions compounded over time. Each time you choose action over procrastination, you're laying another brick in the foundation of your future success.
A Message from Your Future Self
Imagine your future self sending you this message:
Thank you for every time you chose discipline over distraction, action over procrastination. Those moments, which may have seemed small at the time, have shaped who I am today. I am grateful for your foresight, your perseverance, and your commitment to our shared journey. Keep going – I'm proof that your efforts are worth it.
The Power of Now
The next time you are tempted to procrastinate or break a promise to yourself, remember: your future self is waiting, hoping, and depending on you.
By bridging the gap between your past, present, and future selves, you create a continuum of growth, achievement, and fulfillment.
So, what will you do today that your future self will thank you for?
